Grinding Out Three Points in Wales

If there was a moment when this promotion campaign started to feel like a serious proposition rather than a hopeful exercise, Saturday afternoon at the Swansea.com Stadium might well have been it. This was hardly ninety minutes of football to make the purists swoon, but beating the league leaders on their own turf, keeping a clean sheet and taking all three points is precisely the sort of business that gets you out of the Championship.

The opening exchanges followed a familiar pattern. Swansea tried to pick their way through midfield with neat passing triangles, while our lads set about making life as uncomfortable as possible. Mohamadou Kanté was particularly impressive, chasing down everything that moved and refusing to let the home side settle. His persistence paid off in the 34th minute when he slipped a lovely ball into the box for eighteen-year-old Divine Mukasa, who calmly tucked away a left-footed finish with a composure that belied his age.

The second half became a proper Championship away-day slog. Swansea enjoyed nearly seventy per cent possession, but for all their passing and probing, they couldn't find a way through our defensive wall. In fact, despite all that territorial dominance, the home side failed to register a single shot on target across the ninety minutes. Possession is all very well, but it doesn't count for much if you can't make the goalkeeper work.

We had chances to make life considerably more comfortable, too. Jarrod Bowen forced two superb diving saves from Lawrence Vigouroux, while Joël Piroe passed up a golden opportunity late on against his former club. A second goal would have saved a few nervous glances at the clock, but West Ham don't always do things the easy way.

Instead, we settled for a gritty, occasionally nerve-shredding, thoroughly professional 1-0 victory. The win lifts us back into the automatic promotion places and cuts Swansea's lead at the top to a single point.

There's still a long way to go, and nobody should be booking the open-top bus just yet. But going to the league leaders, keeping them quiet and bringing home three points is exactly the sort of result that separates promotion hopefuls from promotion contenders.

It wasn't pretty. It didn't need to be. Three points, a clean sheet and another step in the right direction.
