Top of the Table (for now), Curse Finally Broken
There is something utterly bizarre about waking up, checking the table, and seeing West Ham United sitting right at the very top.
It certainly wasn’t pretty. For about twenty minutes in the first half, it felt like history was gleefully repeating itself in the damp Horwich air. When Jarrod Bowen slid in the opener after thirteen minutes, you allowed yourself a brief moment of optimism. Naturally, that was a mistake.
Within fifteen frantic minutes, Ethan Erhahon had levelled and Ruben Rodrigues had stroked home a penalty to put Bolton ahead, leaving every travelling supporter wondering why we ever convince ourselves that a trip to this ground might be straightforward.
Yet somehow, this team seems to have quietly developed a backbone.
Dinos Mavropanos hauled us level with a towering header just before half-time, and from there it became a proper scrap. There was nothing particularly elegant about it. Just two teams grinding away, waiting for someone to blink.
Thankfully, that someone was Bolton.
With thirteen minutes remaining, Bowen popped up again to smash home the winner and, in doing so, finally buried a thirty-one-year away hoodoo that had followed us through multiple incarnations of Bolton’s home ground.
Three league wins on the spin. Nine goals scored. And somehow, against all reasonable expectations, West Ham are sitting on top of the Championship.
It wasn’t a tactical masterpiece, but nobody will be putting the performance in a museum. This was about finding a way to win, ending a three-decade curse and climbing to the summit of the table.
A chaotic, slightly ridiculous evening in Horwich, then.
Which, frankly, is exactly the sort of evening that reminds you why we bother following this club in the first place.
