Second Gear, Fresh Ink, and the Long Road Back

Having briefly stepped away from the altar of East London football over the weekend, I returned to find that West Ham had quietly gone about their business in the most uninspired fashion imaginable.

We managed to bore Portsmouth into absolute submission on Saturday, strolling to a comfortable 3-1 victory in a Carabao Cup tie where the Hammers never genuinely looked like shifting out of second gear. It was a deeply sensible, utterly unglamorous affair, executed with all the romantic flair of a Sunday evening boiler service. Still, a win is a win, and it safely delivered us into the next round.

Our reward for that methodical stroll is a slightly more tricky encounter against Southampton. On paper, it remains an eminently winnable fixture, and more importantly, we managed to avoid the Premier League heavyweights entirely. Small mercies, truly.

Meanwhile, in the theatrical circus of the transfer market, we have miraculously managed to sign yet another player. Manor Solomon has officially joined the ranks, a winger whose existence I was blissfully unaware of until roughly a week ago. Whether he turns out to be an inspired maestro or merely another fleeting figure in our ever-rotating squad remains to be seen, though one lives in perpetual, beautiful hope.

The real business, however, begins shortly. We kick off our grand, painstaking quest to return to the Premier League this Sunday against Burnley. A proper test to open the campaign, undoubtedly.

More on that prospective nightmare later in the week.
