A Four-Goal Reminder Not to Be So Miserable

There are few finer pleasures in football than being rendered an absolute fool by your own pre-match pessimism.

Having spent the lead-up to this trip to St Mary’s forecasting a soul-crushing 90 minutes of iceberg-paced defending and an inevitable, soggy defeat on penalties, I was fully prepared to seek solace entirely in Mike’s chippy. Then the team sheet dropped and, in a genuine surprise, it turned out we actually do have a B-team after all.

Naturally, we opened the evening by sticking rigidly to the script. Ten minutes in, Southampton waltzed through our backline with alarming, soft-butter ease to take the lead. For a fleeting moment, the ghosts of Charlton hovered ominously over the South Coast.

Yet as the half wore on, something unexpected happened. The Hammers began to aggregate a little actual football. Just before the interval, young Josh Ajala latched onto a neat ball from Lewis Orford to restore parity, sending us into the break level. This was punctuated only by a brief, bewildering moment on 44 minutes when I caught myself actually missing VAR during a waved-away penalty shout.

Tragic, really.

Whatever Nuno slipped into the halftime Earl Grey clearly worked wonders. We emerged for the second half looking like an entirely different side. Seven minutes after the restart, Ajala bagged his second with clinical precision, promptly earned himself a triumphant rest, and made way as Nuno began introducing the heavy artillery around the hour mark.

From there, it became an absolute romp.

Taty Castellanos slotted home a third on 75 minutes before Jarrod Bowen applied the final, glorious nail to the Saints’ coffin late on to make it 4-1.

And so, what began with visions of defensive paralysis and another evening spent staring mournfully into a tray of chips ended with a thoroughly unexpected demolition job.

A gorious evening of footballing optimism, leaving us all with that most dangerous of emotions:

Hope.
