A Record-Breaking Tragedy

The ink is barely dry on a club-record £85 million tragedy, and I’m sitting here trying to process how our glittering talisman, Mateus Fernandes, has swapped the majestic claret and blue for the sterile, stadium-sized shopping centre that is Tottenham Hotspur. A classic modern football move, really.

Selling directly to a rival always feels like a crime against humanity. Yet a deeply wicked, beautifully twisted part of my soul feels an immense sense of relief that he didn’t end up at Manchester United. Delivering our finest asset to their relentlessly irritating, entitlement-heavy fanbase of global glory hunters would have been enough to ruin several perfectly good weekends. Instead, Mateus gets to navigate the existential dread of N17.

There is genuine comfort in imagining him a year from now, wrapped in three coats on a Thursday night in February, staring into the middle distance after a 2-1 defeat to somebody called FC Spreadsheet and quietly wondering how exactly he swapped East End adoration for this. The money may be better, but there are some things that even £85 million cannot buy. Such as joy.

Still, let us consult the ledger. The dark clouds of debt have evaporated in a puff of north London cash. The boardroom spreadsheets are finally glowing a healthy shade of green. We are officially unburdened, beautifully unencumbered, and free to embark upon the great chaotic tradition of every football club that has just sold its best player: convincing ourselves that six new signings are somehow better than one genuinely brilliant footballer.

So here we are. Richer, lighter, and cautiously optimistic. The rebuilding begins now. What could possibly go wrong?
